해당 사이트는 인관과 의관으로 인해 조망이 제한되고 주변 경관이 상대적으로 좋지 않다는 점이 주요 특징 중 하나이며, 이러한 조건과 더불어 부지 자체가 경사진 지형이라는 특성을 가지고 있다는 점에 착안해 경사를 적극적으로 활용하는 방향으로 공간을 설계하였다. 특히 의관 뒤편의 그동안 활용되지 않고 방치된 경사진 공간을 스탠딩 계단 형태로 조성하여 사람들이 앉거나 머무를 수 있는 장소로 탈바꿈시켰고, 이 계단은 영화나 스포츠 경기 등 다양한 콘텐츠를 관람할 수 있는 야외 상영 공간으로 기능하도록 계획되었다. 의관 뒤편의 기존 벽면은 본래 활용도가 낮고 시각적으로 단절된 느낌을 주는 요소였으나, 이 벽에 프로젝터로 영상을 투사함으로써 하나의 스크린 역할을 하게 되어 경관 문제를 해결함과 동시에 공간의 활용도를 높였다. 더불어 스탠딩 계단 뒤쪽에는 통창을 설치해 실내에서도 영상을 관람할 수 있도록 하였으며, 이 실내 공간은 단순한 영상 관람을 넘어 사람들이 머물며 쉴 수 있는 카페와 같은 휴식 공간의 기능도 함께 갖추도록 하여 날씨나 계절에 관계없이 유연하게 활용 가능한 환경을 조성하였다. 공간의 동선 또한 유기적으로 연결되도록 설계되었는데, 기존 게이트의 계단과 새롭게 조성한 스탠딩 계단, 메스 2층의 높이를 동일한 경사 레벨로 맞추어 단절 없는 자연스러운 흐름을 유도하였고, 결과적으로 경사라는 지형적 제약을 하나의 설계 전략으로 전환해 시각적·기능적으로 통합된 열린 게이트 공간을 구현하고자 하였다.
One of the main characteristics of this gate is that the view is restricted due to the presence of In-gwan and Ui-gwan buildings, and the surrounding landscape is relatively poor. Taking note of this condition, along with the fact that the site itself is situated on sloped terrain, the space was designed to actively utilize the incline. In particular, the previously neglected and unused sloped area behind Ui-gwan was transformed into a stepped seating area, allowing people to sit or stay, effectively turning it into an outdoor viewing space for movies, sports games, and other content. The existing wall behind Ui-gwan, which had low usability and gave a sense of visual disconnection, was repurposed as a projection screen by using a projector to display images, thereby addressing the landscape issue and enhancing the utility of the space. Furthermore, a large window was installed behind the stepped seating to enable indoor viewing as well, and this interior space was designed to function not only as a viewing area but also as a café-like resting area where people could relax, creating a flexible environment for enjoying visual content regardless of weather or season. The flow of movement within the space was also carefully considered to ensure organic connectivity: the existing gate stairs, the newly added stepped seating, and the second-floor level of the mass were aligned to the same slope level to promote a natural and seamless flow. Ultimately, the sloped terrain, originally a spatial limitation, was transformed into a design strategy to create an open gate space that is both visually and functionally integrated.
